I read a really interesting quote from Jon Gordon, who publishes his weekly Positive Tip Newsletter. In one of his '21 Tips for a Positive New Year' he said... #4. "Talk to yourself instead of listen to yourself. Instead of listening to your complaints, fears and doubts, talk to yourself with words of truth and encouragement."
What he's saying of course, is that if a negative thought enters your mind, immediately recognize this and replace it with a positive opposite.
Some examples:
Negative thought: "I'm never going to be able to finish this project on time. I'm so behind and I'm just not cut out for this."
Positive replacement thought: "I've faced tough challenges like this before and I know my skills and determination will see me complete this project."
---
Negative thought: "I am not good at public speaking."
Positive replacement thought: "I may not have had much experience speaking in public, but I can practice and improve. I can focus on my strengths and prepare well. I can also remind myself that feeling nervous is normal and that people want me to do well."
---
Negative thought: "I'm never going to be successful."
Positive replacement thought: "I will be successful if I stay focused on my long-term goals and work consistently on them to grow my business."
It's important to note that changing negative thoughts to positive ones can take time. The secret is constant and studious practice. But with time and effort, you can learn to recognize negative thoughts when they arise and replace them with more positive, productive thoughts.
Focus on the solution rather than the problem. Keep replacing negative thoughts consistently -- each and every time, each and every day.
It's similar to so-called muscle memory. Practicing self-talk, as Jon Gordon describes, makes your "mental muscles" stronger - giving you greater control over your thoughts.
Reduce negative thinking and feelings.
And you will feel better.
